Based on the information from the dedicatory inscriptions on the objects and their artistic peculiarities, this study aims to demonstrate the importance of liturgical objects in reconstructing the biographies of two representatives of the Plovdiv elite in the first half of the 19th century: Georgios Konstantinou Kentintenoglou, a weaver of coarse wool textiles, and Antonios Komizopoulos, a merchant who emigrated to Russia at the beginning of the 19th century.

A Box for a Cross, Sevlievo, and Batoshevo Monastery “Dormition of the Virgin”. In: Севлиево през вековете. Исторически измерения, събития, личности. Севлиево, 2024, 67-80. ISBN: 978-619-7524-48-2.

abstract: The article focuses on a wooden book-shaped box for a cross, which originates from the region of Sevlievo (Bulgaria). Today, the object is kept in the National Church Museum of History and Archaeology in Sofia, under inventory number 3549. On the lid’s inner part, the scene “Dormition of the Virgin” is depicted and could be attributed to the icon painter Zachariya Tsanyuv from Tryavna. The box for a cross dates back to the third quarter of the 19th century, between the 1850s and 1860s, and most likely, it was used by an itinerant monk from the Batoshevo Monastery “Dormition of the Virgin”.
